Butch Morris, RIP

Butch Morris, the progenitor of "conductioning," a unique form of leading free collective improvisation, died yesterday at the age of 65. The image above is shot of Butch applying his "conduction" for David Murray's Octet. I shot this around 1985 at Sweet Basil. David is the foreground to the left with his bass clarinet. The big band was amazing.
