Julie Martin is Billy Kluver's widow. She was the producer of Robert Whitman's PASSPORTS this evening. She and Billy co-authored the book KIKI'S PARIS on which my wife and I provided editing and proofreading assistance almost 25 years ago. If you're into the history of of early 20th century art, the book is must-have. Billy and Bob Whitman were co-founders of EAT (Experiments in Art & Technology), which put on such well known performance art installations as NINE EVENINGS at the 25th St Armory in NYC in 1966(?) and the Expo 67 Exhibit in Osaka at the Pepsi Pavillion. Billy was responsible for such innovations as Jean Tinguely's sculpture that destroyed itself during its sole performance and the mylar cloud pillows he developed for Andy Warhol. Quite a character he was. Folks like Julie and Bob carry on Billy's legacy. Several years ago, Bob's LOCAL REPORT exhibit, a rather remarkable installation of cell phone videos, was added to the permanent collection at the Guggenheim.
