Federal Government Shutdown in the Great Swamp

The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, October 1, 2013.

The first day of the shutdown of the federal government.

I can't get into the park on my bike; I'll survive that.
But, if I can't get in, what does that mean for the critters in there?
Can they come and go as they please?

Last week, I encountered a large black bear crossing the road about two miles from this spot. I saw him as he ran about twenty feet behind my rear wheel. I guess he had his mind on other things, as, thankfully, he didn't pay any attention to me. I wonder what he thinks about Speaker Boehner and the clowns in the US House of Representatives. I suppose, like several members of the obstructionist Tea Party caucus, the bear probably suffers from limited reading comprehension abilities, so perhaps he is unaware of the shutdown. He is not hemmed in by the obstruction you see in this picture. Of course, I know several spots where I could sneak into the refuge during the shutdown. But I won't use them.

Today, I guess, is probably not a bad day to be a bear in the Great Swamp.
